Armagh provides women and their children with the best possible opportunity to overcome the devasting effects of abuse. For over 25 years, Armagh has been giving help and hope to women fleeing abuse. We are committed to creating an environment that supports women and children through their transition, giving them the support and knowledge necessary to redefine a future. Unlike a first stage or crisis shelter, which responds to short-term emergencies, Armagh is a non-profit, supportive transitional housing program, providing housing and services to women with or without children who have been victims of family violence. Armagh provides supportive transitional housing with 9 residential apartments.

 

We are looking for a full-time Transitional Housing Support Worker to join our team and make a positive difference in the lives of women and children in the Region of Peel. This position is for one (1) year with a possibility for extension.

 

The Opportunity

 

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Transitional Housing Support Worker plays a vital role in assisting women as they strive for independence and break free from abuse. This position encompasses a broad spectrum of services aimed at addressing the issue of women abuse, including the development of transitional support plans, safety planning, community resource navigation, and housing acquisition and maintenance.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Provide comprehensive wrap-around case management support for women, including navigating legal and housing systems, advocating for child and youth family support, offering financial assistance, and facilitating short and long-term goal development.
  • Accompany women to appointments as needed, ensuring they feel supported and empowered throughout the process.
  • Adhere to the Child Protection Act, particularly in terms of the "Duty to Report" section, ensuring the safety and well-being of children involved.
  • Assist women in advocating for themselves, empowering them to voice their needs and concerns.
  • Collaborate with women to develop safety strategies and plans for themselves and their children, ensuring their protection during and after their stay.
  • Assist women in understanding the cycle of abuse and its impact on themselves and their children, providing education and support.
  • Provide guidance and assistance with budgeting and securing financial resources to support their transition.
  • Aid women in completing housing applications and navigating the housing system, ensuring they have safe and stable housing options.
  • Conduct intake and discharge interviews with clients, ensuring all necessary information is accurately documented.
  • Handle emergency and crisis situations with prompt and decisive action, ensuring the safety of all involved.
  • Maintain meticulous records of referrals and client information, ensuring confidentiality and security.
  • Manage client case files and data entry into the program database (WISH) accurately and efficiently.
  • Provide crisis intervention and short-term supportive counseling to residents during their stay and after leaving Armagh.
  • Share on-call responsibilities with the Executive Director, Program Manager, and Child & Youth Worker, ensuring 24/7 support availability.
  • Work with women on legal issues, providing guidance and support through the legal process.
  • Collaborate with women to develop and implement transition plans tailored to their individual needs and circumstances.
  • Ability and experience working with children is an asset, supporting holistic family-centered care.
  • Fulfill any other duties or responsibilities as negotiated and assigned, ensuring the effective functioning of the program and support for its clients.

 

Qualifications

  • 1-2 years’ relevant work experience working with survivors of gender based violence
  • Ability to deal effectively with job related stress and handle crisis situations
  • An awareness of the safety needs of the organization and confidentiality of the clients and agency
  • Computer literate and database experience (Microsoft Office)
  • Current C.P.R. and First Aid training an asset
  • Current Criminal Check for Vulnerable Sector
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills (verbal and written)
  • Experience in working and serving a diverse community
  • Possess maturity and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to the demographics of Peel Region is an asset
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Sound knowledge of issues pertaining to woman abuse, post-traumatic stress, and the social services network within the Region of Peel
  • University or college degree in the human services field
  • Valid Driver's License and use of a reliable vehicle

 

Physical and Mental Effort

 

Based on the work schedule, the frequency of the following tasks will vary according to need:

  • Ability to lift unsupported up to 25 lbs.
  • Carrying / lifting materials, donations etc. using stairs or elevator
  • Changing priorities and work flow to accommodate needs of others and scheduled/imposed timelines
  • Using a computer, monitor and other office equipment
  • Work effectively with people of varied background including the corporate sector
  • Work independently and with frequent interruptions
